How To Wear & Take Off Clothing

By now you will likely have realized that there are buttons on the bottom of your Second Life window.  One of these buttons is labeled 'Inventory'.  If you click this button, a little window will pop up on the right hand side of your window.  This littler window is your 'inventory', and contains all of your belongings in Second Life.

You will note that there is a folder named 'clothing' in your inventory.

The clothing that your avatar is wearing will be shown as bold text, and the word 'worn' beside it.  If you are having a hard time locating the items that your avatar is currently wearing, you can always type the word 'worn' in the search box at the top of your inventory, and all the things you are currently wearing will be shown, enabling you to move them to another folder, or one of your making, if you choose, and also, of course, to take off the items.

Wearing clothing is as simple as 1) dragging them onto your avatar, or 2) double clicking them in your inventory, or 3) right clicking the item in your inventory and selecting 'add item to outfit'.  You may also choose to wear entire folders of items, by either right clicking and selecting 'Add items to outfit', or 'Replace Outfit'.  If you choose to 'replace' rather than to 'add', everything your avatar is wearing or has attached to it, including any prim items, HUDs, etc., will be removed in favor of the folder you just chose.

For an excellent explanation of how to use folders, along with screenies, please check Kel's article on attachments.

That option comes in handy when you're wanting to wear an alternate avatar, such as a little kitty, or a robot, or any other kind of thing you may have picked up in the Ouchies' Clubhouse, or elsewhere, however, it can be pretty irritating if you were to use the option by accident, and ended up taking off all of your prim items and attachments, including hair, AO (animation override), jewelry, and shoes!  To make your life easier, you may want to fix up your inventory folders to organize your clothes, so that they're easier to find and replace.

You are able to right click on any folder in your inventory and choose to create a new subfolder that you can rename as you please, and use like so many plastic hangers, shelves,  and shoeboxes to organize your Second Life closet!

Another thing you might want to do, is to look in your 'Body Parts' folder, towards the top of your inventory window, and create a set of folders to store your skins, hair, animation override, HUDS that you always want to wear, and accessories.  People tend to not want to change their attachments, HUDS, skin and hair every time they change their clothes and shoes, so by putting these items in the 'Body Parts' folder, you are able to remove and add entire folders (outfits) of clothes in your 'Clothing' folder, without losing the things you want to keep wearing.  This way you won't go bald every time you try and wear a new pair of pants, or, won't have to double click every single item you want to wear!

If you create a folder named 'Always', and then put everything in it that you intend to most always wear, such as a copy of your favorite hair, skin, tattoos, jewelry, animation override, hug attachments, etc., then even if all of those items were to be accidentally removed, you only would need to right click your 'always' folder, and 'add to outfit', for them all to be put back where they belong!  Also, if you 'replace outfit' in order to wear another avatar, then it's easy to switch back and forth.  In order to avoid ever being naked in public, you might want to put a copy of some clothes in your 'always' folder as well, but that's up to you, of course.
