Second Life Etiquette - Page Two
  • It is not smiled upon to go walking around naked in Second Life, unless specifically indicated otherwise. Yes, you are able to get naked in Second Life. No, your starting skin does not have genitals. Yes, you can purchase them. No, it is not appropriate to be naked in the clubhouse, ever.

  • Please respect other people's personal privacy, particularly regarding their first lives (their 'real', offline life).  Some people claim to be utterly themselves in SL, and may even post their real life pictures, while some choose to live a fantasy.  Yes, it may be a dude playing that cute girl, or a girl playing that arctic wolf.  It's their perogative to do just that, and also good sense to guard their personal information from a safety standpoint.
  • It is not polite to ask people for linden dollars (L$), or items. Ouchies will offer basics to their new members. There are ways to make money in Second Life if you are creative, or simply patient. This information is available here, and found in the notecards at the clubhouse also.

  • Be careful with the flirtation. If you are a charmer with the ladies, or gentlemen, you are generally within your rights to try your wiles on them, within reason. If they are not interested, however, continuing to engage them, in open, or instant message, or any other way, including simply following them around (often called 'puppy dogging'), will earn you a ban at least, and a visit by the Lindens or perma ban at worst.

  • You may ask for friendship, but please do not be upset if refused.  Some people 'friend' everyone, and some don't.  It's likely nothing personal, but merely a preference.
  • It is not polite to enter themed areas as a visitor and disrupt the place. The best examples of this point are someone entering a themed roleplay sim and making fun of all the Jedi, Wookies, trekkies, or Elves; or, going to a sim that caters to a particular lifestyle or fetish, and mocking or berating them for it. It is guaranteed to earn you a ban in that area, tarnish your reputation, and could even end up with official reprimand or other actions by the Lindens. Realize where your interests lay, and where you're welcomed, and stick to there. (Example: A guy hanging out in a lesbian club.. may not be the best of ideas!)

  • The final rule, is, of course, the inevitable golden one. What can we say? It's a good rule! Second Life is an amazing place, sometimes a disgusting place, many times a disappointing place, sometimes even a miraculously cathartic place. The only thing we can really do to influence how good an experience it is, is to treat people as we'd like to be treated ourselves. There are all sorts of inclinations, from dressing like a giraffe, to being a cyber escort, to roleplaying a Jedi, or an exotic alien slave. Everyone will not believe, look, or act like you do. The best course of action, is if their behavior is not against terms or service, and/or 'griefing' you (harrassing in some way), just walk, fly, or teleport away. Don't let them goad you into a bad time, bad mood, or give their negative actions the benefit of your attention.
